REV BONNY WELL

CAVAN CHIEF'S PROSPECTS

(Special from "Irvington.") , CHRISTCHURCH, October 7.

Plenty of solid work without anything of a fast nature has been Great Admiral's routine in recent weeks, and he is now in fairly robust order. He has been moving freely and has only to regain his .early form to be a good winner from his present mark. An improvement in barrier manners has been noted in Rey Bonny's' recent outings, and if he maintains his present progress he will not belong in winning races. He has done well for A. Johnston, and his track work has shown him to have plenty of speed. MAKING GOOD PROGRESS. Little Derby, a useful winner last season, is back on the tracks under J. Davidson and is making good progress. He has the ability to go fast, but he has found it difficult to negotiate small tracks arid" this will count against him in the future. Although he should be able to go a solid mije, Cavan Chief has shown himself to be; sadly lacking in stamina, and he will need to improve a good deal in this respect to pay his way on local tracks. The good impression formed of Tinker was endorsed by that pacer's vtwo good showings at Methven last week, when he won and ran second in his two starts over a mile and a quarter. The Truman Direct—Logan Princess gelding displayed'a good turn of speed, but his showings suggested that he is never likely to shine as a stayer. E. A; Berry has devoted a good deal of time to Flying Helen with the result that she has built up considerably in condition in the past few weeks. The speed shown by her when she was first put in work suggested that once she gained solid condition she would have little difficulty in winning races. However, now that she is looking more robust, she does not appear capable of producing her early speed,.. and her recent showings have been of a disappointing standard. .An interesting, re-entry to the active Is.William, a pacer who was highly regarded as a two-year-old, but* who failed tb_ riiake the expected im-i provement. Early in his career he showed fine speed in training and ran some fair races, but he developed the habit of pulling with the result that he did not train on. Now a five-year-old, William has furnished into a good stamp of gelding and the useful work he has done since his return suggests ™at he'has settled down with age When he _is more advanced in condition he will join J, Fraser's team. WELL-BELATED. Mr. W. J. Mbrland is handling a fine type ortwo-year^old by U. Scott from Rustic Maid, This youngster has not been asked any speed tests in his work to date, but he has already shown that he is a most capable pacer. Rustic K an JlV lst? r to * g°od Performer in Gold Country, being by Rey .de Oro from a former champion ahd a great producer in Country Belle Ferry Post lost few friends by .his defeat m ; the Methven Cup last week He was slowly away, but he quickly made .up ground and disputed the lead oyer the final mile, fighting on gamely only to go under in a hard finifh toa fine young pacer.in PRilario. Had he enjoyed the: same run as did the win-

ner, he would have reversed the placings. '-"•■-

Since she last raced. Diversion ha»' done really well,: building up in condition and taking on a bright appearance.. This mare is an attractive worker and the order she is in at present would suggest that it will not be long before she is again displaying; the dash that made her early-form so full of promise.
