MARATHON RACE

LOCAL ATHLETES

LABOUR DAY SPORTS

Wellington athletes will have the opportunity of competing in a marathon championship race over the full distance of 26 miles 385 yards on Labour Day. In recent years marathon races have been held in Wellington, but these have not been for a championship title, and now that the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association has allotted a New Zealand title to a marathon race that will be held at the National championship meeting at Napier in February, the Wellington centre has decided to hold a local championship. The race will be held in conjunction with the Labour Day sports at Newtown Park and will be controlled by officials of the Wellington harrier sub-committee.

Competitors, who must be twenty years of age or older, must undergo an examination by a doctor during the week prior to the race. At the request of the officials, a competitor may be required to undergo a further medical examination prior to the start of the race, and for this purpose all runners will have to be at the starting point at Newtown Park at least thirty minutes before the starting time of 1.30 p.m.

Each competitor will be allowed two attendants, who will be allowed to ac-1 company him on a bicycle or in a car. The attendants will not be permitted to accompany the competitors' at the start of the race, but will have to proceed to an appointed place about five miles from the starting point, where they will join their men. No refreshments will be allowed until the first five miles are completed and no attendants will be allowed on the park at the conclusion of the race.

Competitors who receive assistance other than refreshments or clothes from their attendants, or massage from another competitor, will automatically be disqualified, and attendants must either remain behind the competitors they are attending or be sufficiently far in front.to prevent their giving pace assistance.

Entries will close at James Smith's, Ltd., on Friday.
