SMOKE CONCERT

ATHLETIC FOOTBALL CLUB

A large gathering of club members and guests was present at the annual smoke concert of the Athletic Football Club held in the Conference Hall of the Dominion Farmers' Institute on Saturday night. Apologies for nonattendance were received from Messrs. J. W. Heenan, R. J. Waters, D. Madden, | and T. Thompson. The chairman (Mr. F. C. Atkinson) asked those present to observe one minute's silence as a mark of respect to the late Mr. W. S. Ridler, one of the pioneers and a past-president of the clubMr. W. Thompson, of the Wellington Club, proposed the toast of the Athletic Football Club. Replying, Mr. Atkinson said that, to him, the best part of Rugby was not the winning of trophies or championships but the friendships and associations formed. He also referred to the club's fine record of eight players gaining representative honours. I Trophies won during the season were presented as follows:—Stone Cup, D. Jones; D. G. A. Cooper Cup, C. F. Rowberry, of the second fifteen; Frobisher Cup, K. Fairey and R. Hammond; Moran Cup, W. Evenson; Brough Cup i and Diamond Jubilee Shield, third grade first division team. The toasts of the referees, the Press, past players, and kindred clubs were honoured. Enjoyable musical items were given by the Arnold Entertainers and the Harmonists' Band. Mr. Kirk-Burnand | led some enthusiastic community singing and two highly-appreciated comedy items by Ventrix added to the succew of the evening.
