ON TRENTHAM TRACKS

OTAKI CANDIDATES

CENTRE'S HAND OF THIRTY

(By "Rangatira.")

Otaki candidates attracted most interest in the galloping at Trentham this morning. There are over thirty horses from the centre among Saturday's acceptors, nearly a third of the total, so a share at least of the prize-money from the meeting is likely to be taken by its candidates. The horses, as a result of the better weather recently, are more forward than they were a month ago, but several will still j be benefited with more racing.

After light rain overnight the going was slightly greasy on top this morning. The outside of the trialgrafcs was opened for the first time since last spring. The weather was still threatening, with occasional rain. Most of the galloping was of an easy nature. Accomplice (A..G. P. Newnham) and Sigurd (G. Flood) finished up a round of pacing with, three furlongs in 40sec.Ugly Duckling (F- Power) took 51sec for half a mile.

Punarua (L. T. Nesbitt) joined Good Sun (R. L. Hitchen) at the six furlongs, the latter having started from the seven furlongs, and he finished a neck in front in lmin 17sec. Good Sun is still a bit sore, and he is not working too willingly.

Twilight Song (S. Wilson) ran half a mile alone in 57 3-ssec. Ro^al Star H (Newnham) and the Beau Pere—Passbook colt (Flood) did an easy halfmile in 58sec. Twenty Grand (R. A. Hawkings) and War Cloud (S. G. Robinson) took lmin 22sec fbr six furlongs. 'Alunga (A. W. Sim) was all out to beat Arctic King (Wilson) by a neck over five furlongs, the last half-mile in 50sec. Alunga ran off the track at the start and Arctic King had to wait for him, the first furlong taking 15sec. Lustral (A. Foster) again won a gallop when beating Galteemore (A. E. Bennet) by a length, with Boomerang (Wilson) two lengths away, after running seven furlongs in lmin 30sec, the last half-mile in 52 2-ssec. Although Lustral had a deal the best of the weights, it was another good trade trial, and as a result he is to be given a further chance at Otaki, where P. Burgess will ride him. Free Gold (Sim) led Floral Robe (Foster) away from the half-mile, but as usual he stopped near the post and was beaten home a couple of lengths in 49 3-ssec, the best timi of themorning for the distance. Free Gold has always been a" lazy worker, but it remains to be seen if he will run on in races following his operation for respiratory trouble.' In appearance he looks well enough, and he has filled out during his spell. Dungarvan was sharpened up only down, the straight. Raroa (D. Lamb) ran her last half-mile in 51 4-ssec. Southern Blood (D. Gordon) did his last half-mile in 55sec. Quimper, Piastre, Sunder, Sunny Blonde, and Silver Fox did only useful work. Trebor, Drachma, Acrobat, Lady Lyric, Telamon, and White Lady are afternoon workers. - Other gallops included Gothic (Doric —Sister Vamp) , and Diafeus, three furlongs in 37 3-ssec; Prudent Prince and Excitement—Ritual colt, three furlongs on the inside grass in 36 '2-ssec; Sceptre (Bulandshar—Silver Strand), three furlongs easily in 40sec; Sardue, half-mile in 53 2-ssec; Hinerawe, who easily beat Dampier, five furlongs in lmin 6 2-ssec, the last halfmile in 53 2-ssec; and Coronado and Lady Baron, last half-mile of five furlongs in 53 3-ssec. Alloa (W. J. Bromby) jumped four fences very smartly, giving his best exhibition yet in a school. Sunee (L. T. Nesbitt) was clean and safe in a similar school, but he did not go over the fences with the same pace on as Alloa produced. Additional riders for Saturday are:— P. Burgess, Son and Heir (as vtell as Piastre and Lustral);. S. Wilson, Revival in hack event; F. Power, probably Ugly Duckling; I. Rohloff, Southern Blood; and D. Lamb, Raroa. Siegmund will probably be ridden again by J. McCauley, who will also be on Mother-in-Law. *
