(By Telegraph—Press Association.) HASTINGS, September 26. • The National candidate for Hawke's Bay, Mr. G. A. Maddison, addressed a large and enthusiastic meeting at Hastings tonight. There were many interjections from a small section of the audience. The speaker criticised the social security scheme as put forward by the Labour Party. It would ultimately cost the people 2s in the £ he said. A vote of confidence in the candidate and in the National Party was passed with some dissentients.

Ha regretted, that he would not be; able to take advantage of the National £100 furniture scheme as he already had three children., " The candidate favoured private enterprise, and instanced the delay taking place in the resumption of the Lewis Pass Government service. He said that with//three;eighths of the voting at the last election Labour held five-eighths of the seats. in Parliament. The way to obviate this anomaly was to adopt proportioned representation, which the Labour Party advocated before the last election, but did not seem to want now.
