HELD BY PEARCE
PADDON'S STRONG BID
(Received September 12, 9 a.m.) TORONTO, September 10. Ten thousand spectators saw R. H. Pearce (Toronto) retain his world sculling title by convincingly beating Paddon (Australia) over a' choppy, wind-swept course by eight lengths. Winning the toss, Pearce jumped into the lead immediately, and held the inside lane throughout. At the halfmile mark Paddon was right behind, but, striking rough water, he went off the stroke. Pearce was three lengths ahead rounding the mile buoy, but on the second mile stretch Paddon, rowing with a beautiful short stroke, gradually cut down the lead. He was right on Pearce's stern at the tvrrn. However, the champion, stroking a strong 38, pulled away in the final mile. During the last half he simply paddled to hold a good eight lengths lead.
