CAMERA ARTIST HONOURED
The privilege of Fellowship of the Royal Society of Arts, London, has been conferred on Mr. A. R. Kingsford, A.R.P.S., of Nelson, who is well known as a camera artist.
The Royal Society of Arts was founded in 1754 and received Royal Charter from Queen Victoria in 1847. His Majesty King George VI is patron of the society. The object of the Royal Society of Arts is to assist in the advancement, development, and practical application of every department of science in connection with the arts, manufactures, and commerce. It was the effort of this society that led to the formation of the Royal Academy in 1768 and in 1852 it was responsible for the first public exhibition of photographic pictures. The foundation, of the National Training School of Music (now the Royal College of Music) was due directly to the efforts of the Society. The Albert Medal, instituted as a memorial of H.R.H. the Prince Consort, for 18 years president of the society, is awarded annually by the society for "distinguished merit in promoting arts, manufactures, or cpmmerce." Queen Mary was the recipient for 1938.
