PHENOMENAL AJAX
LEADING STAKE-WINNER
By his two recent wins in the Underwood Stakes and the Memsie Stakes the last two Saturdays, : the Heroic horse Ajax has set a record that does not look like being broken this season. He. is now the greatest stake-winner racing in Australia today. Previous to Saturday, Ajax had won £19,700 in stakes; and, with the addition of £700 won in the Memsie Stakes, he has brought his total to £20,400 and assumed a lead of £900 over the Queenslander, Lough Neagh.
Ajax has greater opportunities and prospects than Lough Neagh and should go on 'bettering his advantage. However, he has a long way to go to equal the record of Phar Lap, whose stakeearnings totalled £66,738. Ajax has now won; at his last eight starts. His last defeat was when he was beaten half a head by Hua in the V.R.C. Derby last October. During the autumn he won the difficult V.A.T.C. Caulfield Futurity Stakes and V.R.C. Newmarket Handicap double- on successive Saturdays. No one will dispute that he is the . most brilliant horse at present racing in Australia.
