AMATEUR BOXING

CHAMPIONSHIP BOUTS

EXCELLENT STANDARD

Plenty of action and excellent boxing were provided on the opening night of the Wellington amateur boxing championships in the Town Hall last night. The firials will be decided tonight. There was a splendid attendance, and a record number of entries. Most of the bouts were close, but two were decided by knock-outs. Officials were:—Referees, Messrs. Alan Maxwell, Yin. Stone, and A. Thompson; judges, Messrs. W. P. Sommerville, B. A. Guise, and P. W. Woods; timekeepers, Messrs. P. N. Denton and W. N. Tucker; official seconds, Messrs. J. A. G. Mackay, Len McKay; announcer/Mr. T. Rush; stage manager, Mr. L. Tracy. Results are:— SENIOR EVENTS. BANTAMWEIGHT. H. Carbin (Bst 41b) beat W. Cole (Bst 431b) on points after an extra round. The two provided a quickmoving fight without a let-up. Garbin's counter-punching and left leading in the last round won him the decision by a narrow margin. LIGHTWEIGHT. S. Bridge (9st 6flb) beat V. Hatchard (9st 51b) on points. Hatchard left himself open to too many, rights, and besides had to give* way to Bridges in in-fighting. Bridges punched cleanly and heavily. The bout was a real crowd-pleaser. I. Watson (9st 51b) beat L. Parris (9st 61b) on points. Watson had easily the best of the first two rounds, Parris being on the retreat most of the time. Three solid rights to the face in the last round took most of the fight out of Parris, who finished a very tired boxer. MIDDLEWEIGHT. S. Scott (list 3flb) knocked out J. Cameron (list 51b) in the second! round. This was the best bout of the j evening. Neither wasted'any time, I and, short though the fight was, there was more honest punching in it than in any other three 'rounds of the evening. Cameron weathered a terrific beating in the first round, and early m the second appeared to be holding his own. Indeed, he dazed Scott and was going in for a' knock-out when the latter caught him with a right smash, followed by a shattering left.. Cameron dropped and lay on his back. He was out fdr some tune. LIGHT-HEAVYWEIGHT. J. Loftus (list 4Jib) beat T. Troy (list 61b) on points. In a bout of many punches Loftus had the virtue of finding his mark more frequently. He also landed the harder and cleaner blows. There was a good deal of holding by Troy, who was cautioned by the feferee. JUNIOR EVENTS. PAPERWEIGHT. J. Childs (6st 51b) beat R. Archer (6st 111b) on points. Archer tired himself in an early flurry in the last round and thereafter was an easy mark £°rD. thD eoSS£f6s?sgw J. Ceilings, 6st 121b, .on points. Dowman staged a fine last-round rally, whichgained him the verdict. - FLYWEIGHT. J. Morgan, 7st 51b, beat G. McHardy, 7st 131b, on points. Morgan started well, but was dazed in a rally with his heavier opponent, who appeared to have the fight won until the final round. Then, however, Morgan hit McHardy almost at will with lefts and rights. LIGHTWEIGHT. G. Imlach, 9st 81b, <beat T. Cox, 9st 71b, on points. The winner did most of the work. ■ . _ _,__ . ' F. Barnes, 9st B£lb, beat F. O'Keefe, 9st 71b, on points. Barnes kept on top of O'Keefe all the time, and heavier and more accurate punching won him tliG cLsv **■*■■■ Semi-final: F. Coker, 9st 91b, beat Imlach on points. For two rounds Cdker's long left kept Imlach out, and though when the pair mixed it in the last round they broke even, Coker s , early lead was sufficient. > , WELTERWEIGHT. M. McNarn, lOst 21b, beat P. Howard, lOst 21b, on points. Howard's aggression had McNarn at sea in the first round, but later McNarn began to use an excellent straight left, which , gained him the verdict in a very close bout. ■' ' F. Garner, lOst 61b, beat G. Parsons, lOst, on points. Garner, using his feet nicely, avoided Parsons's rushes and landed some telling punches to the body and face. This, plus a very hard left hook, gave Garner the decision. G. Lovatt, 9st 13£lb, beat T. Clements, 9st 10£lb, on points. Lovatt did most of the attacking, and though he took most of the punches, his aggression carried the day. MIDDLEWEIGHT. F. Moyle, lOst 131b, beat A. Staples,; list 41b, on a technical knock-out in the first round. Staples had no defence for Moyle's fast and heavy punches. He was down for three, and was then knocked through the ropes, the referee stopping the fight when he got to his feet dazed after a further short count. HEAVYWEIGHT. E. Kingston, 15st, beat C. Ryan, 13st, on points. There was not only a big difference in weight, but also in height and reach in Kingston's favour, but this did not daunt the stocky Ryan, who had Kingston on the floor for a count | of three in the first round. Ryan was also on the canvas in the next round, but more from Kingston's weight in a rush than from a punch. Ryan was down three more times in the last round for the same reason, but what margin there was in the fight was certainly in favour of Kingston, though a section of the crowd disagreed.
