HALF-YEARLY MEETING
Mention of the work being done in all New Zealand ports by Toe H in keeping in touch with men on ships in New Zealand waters, thus helping to dispel the loneliness of many strangers to this country, was made by Auckland delegates to the half-' yearly meeting of the Dominion executive of Toe H, states a message to the Press Association. Mr. Gordon Turvey, deputy administrator of Toe H in New Zealand, outlined the progress made during the past year. The meeting expressed appreciation of the work he had done and regret at his impending departure. Mr Turvey will take up similar work on the staff of Toe H in Tasmania from October. The formation of a new flourishing group at Te Awamutu was reported. Groups have also been started at Greymouth and Ashburton. Mr. James Vogel spoke on the Boy Scout Jamboree to be held in Wellington during Christmas, 1939, and the hope was expressed that Toe H members would render assistance. The Rev. Owen Williams said that social surveys should be undertaken by Toe Has a means of directing its services more usefully. He particularly stressed the Maori problems. Miss Helen Benbow, registrar from London of Toe H League of Women Helpers, submitted a report on her six months' work in New Zealand with the women's movement. The meeting was attended by Dr. F. T. Bowerbank (Dominion chairman), the Rev. O. W. Williams (hon. Dominion padre), and representatives from Auckland, Taranaki, Wanganui, Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch, Timaru. and Dunedin.
Following complaints by ministers of the Baptist and Anglican Churches that a litter of papers, bottles, and other rubbish was left on church properties by dancers at the City Hall, Gisborne, the Borough Council decided, a Press Association message states, to ask the hall owners to improve the conditions of hire and that no pass-out checks be civen at evening gatherings. „ - >
