PERSONAL NOTES
Mrs. Noel Nelson and Miss Cookson were passengers from Liverpool by the Ulysses on their way back to New Zealand after a very pleasant visit to the Old Country, writes "The Post's" correspondent from London.
Mr. and Mrs. H. Hawthorn, formerly of Wellington, are leaving Auckland by the Aorangi today for Honolulu, where Mr. Hawthorn, who is 8.A., M.Sc, will take up a Research Fellowship in Anthropology at the University of Hawaii. Mr. Hawthorn has been teaching in remote Maori settle-| ments for the last three years, gaining, experience for his year of research. He was educated at Wellington College and Victoria University College. Mrs. Hawthorn is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. S. Davidson, Kelburn, and was herself prominent in teaching, debating, and amateur theatrical circles here. Their small daughter is accompanying her parents to Honolulu. Mrs. A. Longmore, Wellington, is staying with her mother, Mrs. E. E. Hadfield, Christchurch. •Miss Agnes Mac Lean, Mulgrave Street, has left to pay visits to friends in Christchurch. , Mrs. V. O'Kane, Wellington, and her daughter, Miss Zell O'Kane, will be staying in London permanently, advises "The Post's" London correspondent. Miss O'Kane will continue her vocal studies. They are both looking forward* to the musical season. They have decided to settle for a time in a very pleasant flat in East Finchley. Mrs. J. K. B. Taylor has returned to Wellington after spending a holiday in New Plymouth with her sister, Mrs. Hunter Hamilton. Mr. and Mrs. Taylor Derbyshire gave a very enjoyable farewell sherry party to Miss N. M. Scanlan on. the eve of her departure for New Zealand, via Sbuth Africa and Australia, states "The Post's" correspondent, writing from London on August 15. Miss Scanlan'left Liverpool by the, Ulysses on 13 and she expects tb arrive in New Zealand at the end of October. . Miss Noreen O'Reilly, Palmerston North, has returned from a visit to Wellington. / Miss Betty Wallace, Wellington, is visiting Mrs. R. •W. Bellfinger, Sunnyside, Christchurch." Mrs., H. Hardcastle, who has been spending a holiday in Christchurch, has returned to Lower'Hutt. Miss Muriel Waugh returned to the south on Sunday after judging the national dancing at the Wellington Competitions Society's, festival. Miss Lois Waugh accompanied her. j A passenger by the Mataroa, which left England for New Zealand on September 2, was Mrs. Holl, who will visit her sister, Mrs. Peacock, in Wellington. Mrs. C. W. Porter, Palmerston North, has been spending a 1 holiday in Wellington with her daughter, Mrs. J. Newport, Rongotai. f Mrs. W. I. Shrimpton has returned to New Plymouth after a visit to Wellington. ' Miss Esther H. Denniston, Wellington, left England at the end of August for the United States ard Canada. From last October until April she was nursing in Switzerland. . At Easter she had an interesting trip to Holland. Miss Denniston has lately returned from a nine weeks' tour of Germany, part of her time being spent with a family in Pqmerania and partly with. Mrs. Oertel (formerly Betty Rankine Brown, of Wellington), in Krefeld. Miss N. O'Brien, Otautau, is visiting Wellington, and is staying at the Grand Hotel. Mesdanles R. F. Mitchell (Hinakura), E. R. Spriggs (Napier), C. G. Dermer, and J. K. Oakden (Cheltenham) are staying- at the Empire Hotel. Mrs. S. E. Fox and Miss Kitty Grebble (Auckland), Mrs. B. S. Hor-I kinier and Miss Estelle. Horkimer (New York) are guests at the Midland Hotel. - Guests at the Hotel Waterloo include Mesdames E. Barnes (Bluff), A. E.| Hammer, R. E. Alpe (Auckland)* H. D.
