RAIN EXPECTED

Special forecast for Wellington: Light to freshening north-east winds. - Weather dull and rain probable tonight and tomorrow. Temperatures mild. The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today by the Meteorological Office, is for north-easterly to northerly winds, strong to gale force north of Kawhia and East Cape, elsewhere light to fresh and increasing. Weather fair at first in the far south, otherwise dull with mist and fog in many places. Rain probable in most districts, heavy in the far north, with flooding in places, but scattered and mainly light in the South Island. Temperatures mild. The anti-cyclone which has controlled the weather over New Zealand during the past week is now centred near the Chatham Islands. Pressure is low over eastern Australia, while a rather shallow cyclonic depression is located north-west of Cape Maria van Diemen. The latter has brought about a break to the period of settled weather. Winds have been from the north-east and south-east, but were this morning mainly north-east. Gales are being experienced north of Auckland, but elsewhere their force is mainly moderate to strong. Weather has continued fair to fine over the southern half of the South Island, but over the rest of the Dominion has steadily changed for the worse. Rain was general this morning over North Auckland, and is scattered over the remainder of the North Island. There have been some heavy falls in the far I north, Monganui reporting 2.1 inches. Temperatures have been cool to moderate. A strong north-easterly wind and dull cool weather has- prevailed at Auckland. Yesterday there were scattered light showers, but this morning it was raining steadily. The total fall to 9 a.m. was .09in. The maximum j temperature was 55.8 degrees, and the j minimum last night 52.7 degrees. Wellington also had a dull day with neither sun nor rain. The weather cleared during the night, but was overcast again and somewhat threatening this morning. During the morning yesterday there was a moderate south-westerly breeze, which fell light during the afternoon. The maximum temperature was 49.9 degrees, and the minimum last night 41.8 degrees, there being a light black frost at Kelburn, where the minimum temperature on the grass was 28.1 degrees. Christchurch had increasing cloud during the day yesterday and by this morning there was a very light continuous drizzle. A moderate northeasterly wind has blown and temperatures have been mild. The maximum was 50.7 degrees, and the minimum 44 degrees. For the first time for some days there were no frosts.

Dunedin was the only one of the main centres which had a sunny day yesterday, and this morning it was still fine. In the morning yesterday there was a light cold south-west wind, but during the afternoon and at night a very strong north-easterly blew.
