SETBACK SUFFERED

WAIRARAPA CLUB'S LOSS

"The club experienced an unfortu- j riate setback in connection with its February Meeting owing to its conflicting with the Gladstone Horse Sports, a picnic at Tauherenikau at which the Prime Minister was present, and a tennis tournament, and as a result the income account discloses a loss of £300 3s 2d," states the annual report of the Wairarapa Trotting Club. Continuing, the report reads: "The horses who competed at our meeting were of a high class, and our thanks are extended to the owners and trainers who patronised the fixture. On the other hand, the meeting held in the preceding December was a most successful one in every way. "Your stewards recommend two separate days' racing for the coming season, and propose holding fixtures on December 26, 1938, and February 25, 1939. These dates were approved and granted by the dates, committee. At the annual meeting you will be asked to elect seven stewards. Those retiring are Messrs. A. O. Abbott, R. W. Beu, W. J. Fitzgerald, R. Gallon, B. Sewell, J. C. Skeet, and R. R. Tilson, all of whom again offer their services. "It is with deep regret that we record the passing of two staunch followers of the club, Messrs. Hugh Morrison and A. B. Balfour. The late Mr. Morrison was long connected with the club and was a great worker in its interests. The late Mr. Balfour was also a very keen worker and for many years was a valued totalisator steward."
