LAVISH SCALE
HOMES FOR EMPLOYEES
The provision of £15,000 for hornet for employees of State sawmills was described as ridiculous expenditure by Mr. W. J. Poison (National, Stratford) during a brief discussion on the Estimates for the State Forestry Department in the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon. He said that many firms in private business were providing excellent homes for their workers, but nothing on the lavish scale contemplated by the Government. The Chairman of Committees (Mr. B. J. Howard): There is nothing on the Estimates about private enterprise Mr. S. G. Holland (National, Christchurch North): Hear! Hear!. Mr. Poison: The timber industry should be left to private enterprise. These firms are operating with all classes of New Zealand forest timber, but the State can produce timber for cheese boxes only. The Minister in Charge of State Forests (the Hon. F. Langstone) replied that the State had gone to a great deal of expense in raising plantations that would be of increasing value in the production of al classes of timber. It would be foolish if it did not make adequate provision, to protect this asset from the menace of jfire. That was why it was taking pains to house its staff comfortably and to provide the latest methods of protection from damage.
