BASKETBALL

GEELONG BEATS N.Z.

FIRST LOSS ON TOUR

(Special to the "Evening Post" from

Mrs. H. D. Muir.)

The New Zealand basketball team suffered its first loss on the Australian tour when it met Geelong, a team representative of the four basketball as-' sociations in Geelong. This was the first game played on grass, and added to this disadvantage was the extremely slippery surface of a wet ground with very little turf on it. The New Zealanders" failed to gain confidence, the uncertain footing affecting the whole team and making the different footwork rules of the Australian game even more difficult. The team for this game was J. Tyrell, E. Neame, E. Howard, M. Martin, R. Butcher, F. Southon, and M. Matangi.

J. Tyrell, who has been shooting most accurately during the tour, in this game lost form, and as a result the New Zealand score suffered badly. F. Southon and R. Butcher both made some good interceptions, but frequently gave passes which were easily intercepted by Geelong. M. Olver, Geelong,r a left-handed .thrower, was remarkably accurate in her shots, netting from practically any part of the circle and being responsible for most of the Geelong goals. The Geelong team played a very strong game and fully deserved their win. Prior to the match, the New Zealand team was given a civic welcome and was entertained at morning tea by the Mayoress, Mrs. Brown, They were the guests of the Unity Association for luncheon after a drive to Barwon Heads. Before returning to Melbourne the New Zealanders were entertained by the other two basketball associations Y.W.C.A. and Band of Hope. .:
