MAN FINED £15
A fine of £15 was imposed by Mr. A. M. Goulding, S.M., in the Petone Court today on Hector George Wilmshurt, a cooper, aged 32, on a, charge of being intoxicated in charge of a car. His licence was cancelled until May 31, 1940.
Senior-Sergeant H. C. D. Wade said that about 6 p.m. on Saturday the defendant was driving his car and knocked a man down at the corner of Richmond and Jackson Streets. He had a passenger in the car who told him to drive on and pull up a little further on and he would attend to the man in the meantime. Wilmshurst did this and saw the man, who was not badly hurt. He then went into a hotel and had three or four brandies to steady himself, as.' he said. He went back to the car intending to drive home, but was stopped by Constable Harris, who saw that he was unfit to drive. A doctor certified he was intoxicated.
The Magistrate, in imposing the penalty, said that Wilmshurst was very fortunate in being stopped from going on with the car. But for the fact that he had old people dependent on jiim he would have been sent to gaol.
