SURPRISE DECISION
What appeared to be a surprise decision on points was given to Barney Down, of Wellington, in the professional welterweight boxing contest against Vie Caltaux, of Auckland, at Invercargill last week. Caltaux carried the fight to his opponent in at least eight of the 12 rounds, and although most of his punching was not as straight as that of Down, he scored about three times as often.
Before the last round Caltaux appeared to be so far ahead on points that all he required to do was to avoid the knock-out punch Down sought to deliver throughout the bout. He kept away • from Down in the first minute of the round but thereafter mixed it and shared the honours.
