AITKEN'S FORM
HIS BOUT WITH GILDO
After a brisk contest at Palmerston North last week Billy Aitken, of Wellington, managed to beat Young Gildo on points over a fifteen-round journey. Considering this was the Wellington boy's first bout for a long spell he did surprisingly well, and should be a force to be reckoned with during the rest of the season.
It would not surprise if he had a tilt at the lightweight title which was won by Clarrie Rayner from Jack Jarvis at Blenheim on Saturday night. If he can produce the form he showed against Gildo he would have the Blenheim boy moving quickly.
According to a Manawatu exchange Aitken just shaded his opponent on points practically throughout. Though Gildo actually took only one round, the margin of points against him in nearly every session was exceedingly small, and it was a brisk encounter. Aitken won the first four rounds, but his points lead was, as stated, slight. The next two rounds were even, and Gildo won the seventh. The eighth was even, Aitken took the next two, and the eleventh was even. The last round was Aitken's. Long-range tactics gave him the verdict, Gildo specialising in infighting. Had Aitken not come in to close quarters so frequently he would have won by a wider margin.
