A MODEST WRITER
Among those who have entered the controversy in London whether the supply of books meets the demand is Mrs. Belloc Lo'wndes, who certainly has nothing with which to reproach herself on this score, either in point of quality or of quantity. She has written about thirty novels, as well as some plays, and it would be difficult to say on which side of the Atlantic she is the more appreciated. Although one of the leading novelists of-the day (says1 a London writer) Mrs. Belloc Lowndes is exceedingly modest about Her fame, and she is also only too willing to give a helping hand to other writers. She is a sister of Mr. Hilaire Belloc, and though there is little physical similarity between them, there is considerable identity of outlook. One of her daughters is the Countess of Iddesleigh, who before her marriage ran the Wiseman Society with marked efficiency, and is now extremely active in all matters connected with infant welfare.
