WAIPORI LAUNCHED

UNION COMPANY SHIP

Cable advice has been received by the' Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand, Ltd., that their new vessel Waipori was successfully launched on July 28 at the yards of Messrs. R. and W. Hawthorn, Leslie and Co., Ltd., Newcastle-on-Tyne. ' The- launching ceremony was.performed by Mrs: F. B. O'Meara, wife of a member of the company's local board of directors in London.

The Waipori is a single screw oilburning steamer, and is intended to be employed in the,- intercolonial cargo trade. The vessel's hull' incorporates the arc-form design and. her principal dimensions are:—Length,, b.p. 348 ft; breadth, 55ft; moulded depth, 28ft 6in; gross tonnage, 4400 tons; speed, 13 knots. She is expected to leave the United Kingdom about the middle of October, but the route of her outward voyage has not been decided yet.
