NATIVE FINED
BOOKMAKING CHARGE
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
ROTORUA, This Day.
Remarking that it was unfortunate that the principal had not been brought before the Court, Messrs. H. Tai Mitchell and O. H. Coleman, Justices of the Peace, this morning convicted and fined a Native billiard room proprietor, Neri Rodgers, £20 for bookmaking.
The police said that a raid carried out on Saturday had resulted in a good quantity of betting material being found, showing that the defendant was operating as an agent in a large way. Mr. J. D. Davys, for the defendant, admitted the offence, stating that it was the first time that Rodgers had been before the Court. He was a married man with three children. An application had already been lodged with the council for a transfer of the billiard room licence.
The Bench allowed seven days for payment of the fine.
