ROTARY DINNER

(From "The Post's" Representative.) WANGANUI, July 5. The Wanganui Rotary Club's annual invitation to wives and friends for dinner and dancing proved to be one of the pleasantest of many pleasant functions, and in honour of the president's nationality the bagpipes were much in evidence. The guests were piped to their dinner and when the old president, Mr. McSkimming, vacated the presidential chair, and the next president, Archdeacon J. B. Young, was installed, Pipe-Major Budge played "Cock o' the North." The activities of the sergeant-at-arms with his ingenious pretexts for. fines with which to fill his "Sunshine Box," caused much amusement. The past president was presented with a handsome teaset, and during the evening musical items, accompanied by Mrs. Kendall, were given by Mrs. G. N. Perrett and Mr. Alan Brown. ■. Among the many present were Mesdames J. B. Young (in wallflower ring velvet), P. H. Bethwaite (black ring velvet), A. Douglass (plaid silk), E. H. Payten (blue organdie), S. McCailum (blue ring velvet), O. Allen (black cloque and scarlet jacket), F. Row (blue cloque), J. Small, J. H, Henson, A. H. E. Waif (black sprigged taffeta), A. Larsen (black georgette and lace). A. G. Waghorne, W. Meikle, R. E. Hewat (black ring velvet), D. A. Lilbourne (black taffeta); Misses Carrad, M. Hounsell (Christchurch), and Trevor Hunter. , . Mounted Rifles' Dance. The Westmere-Maxwell troop of the Queen Alexandra Mounted Rifles held a very jolly dance last week in the Westmere Hall. Greenery, the colours of the regiment, head ropes and saddle cloths were all Used to good effect in the decorations. A record number of dancers were present, and everything went with a fine swing. Among those present were Mesdames J. Mahley, D. Hayes, W. Baldwin, R. Clements, F. Dunbar, A* Spriggens, D. Henderson, J. Wright; and Misses M. and N. Chapman, D. Wilkinson, X Moorehouse, T. Taylor, J. Sims, B. Bell, E. Laing, E. Pratt, Carwardine (2), Barber (2), Connell (2), Wickham, Prince (2), J. Clements, and A. Wilson. A Farewell. . . A member of the Otiku Presbyterian Church for the past fifteen years, Mrs. W. J .Beckett, sen., was "given a farewell prior to leaving for Wariganuii. At an enjoyable evening she was presented with a handsome handbag by the Rev. King, on behalf of her friends. Repertory Society. The Repertory Society's Theatre was jfilled to capacity when members enjoyed the acted reading of lan Hay's "Happy Ending." The dressing and setting were delightful, .particularly the "garden" scene with the Chinese lanterns and view of the river. Mr. Roland Young produced the play and Mrs. Roland Young and Mr. McCormick played the lead. Others in the cast were Misses M. Hanson, Alison James, M. Brown, M. Brinkman; and Messrs. G. Sainsbury, C. White,, D. Sherriff, F. Wilkie, and Gv Williamson. Personals. " Mrs. H. D'Arcy is visiting the Wairarapa. Mrs. W. Gilberd is visiting Wellington. Miss Jean McGregor, who has been living at. D'Urville Island for the past five months, is staying with her father, Mr. G. McGregor, at Waverley. Mrs. Lan Forlong, who has been visiting Mr. and Mrs. R. ?f. Wilson, has returned to Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. R. G. Talboys. who have spent three weeks in the South Island, returned at the weekend. Mr. and Mrs. A. Mclntyre, who have been the guests of Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Drummorid, have returned to Wellington. Mrs. Carey and Miss Joan Carey are visiting Wellington.
