NEW DEADLY RIFLE

USE BY U.S. ARMY

FIRES '60 SHOTS A MINUTE

(Received July 5, noon.)

NEW YORK, July 4. The Washington correspondent of the United Press learns that the United States Army will soon be equipped with a new secret type of semi-automatic rifle which will multiply the death-dealing potentialities of each soldier by five. The gun has been perfected after years of secret experimentations, and permits the infantryman to fire 60 shots a minute, supplanting the old Springfield rifle, which was capable of less than 15 shots a minute.

Military strategists claim that the new weapon will make the army's enlisted strength of 175,000 men equivalent to 875,000.

The rifle is of the same qalibre as the Springfield, and uses the same ammunition, and is just as accurate. If it proves successful- it will probably be used also in the navy*
