COSTLY EROSION
WESTPORT COASTAL ROUTE
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) WESTPORT, July 4.
Half a mile of the coastal road to Westport has been obliterated by the recent heavy seas and the danger of complete loss of the route is greater than ever before. Expenditure on the road has hitherto been considerable, but experts agree that further expenditure will not permanently re-estab-lish the road. The only alternative is the construction of a new route for a distance of two miles at the foot of the Barrytown Hills half a mile clear of the foreshore. The Minister of Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) over twelve months ago agreed to a survey of the new route, but in the meantime erosion has become the worst on record. A traffic inspector's car was embedded in shingle and had to be removed by workmen. Previously a heavy sea completely overturned another car. It is even doubted if the present route will last until a new one could be opened.
