TOPICS FOR WOMEN

The Maori people present, who attended in gratifying numbers, were delighted with the programme, which was presented by members of the Ngati Poneke Club, and the pakehas, who were also present in equally large numbers, were equally appreciative. Dressed in their swinging piupius, with woven head-bands in their dark hair, a group of Maori girls, led by Miss -Miriama Heketa, performed graceful poi dances and action songs. They were accompanied in the latter by the young men of the club, and all the songs were the compositions of Mr. Kingi Tahiwi. The club is under the guidance of Mr. Tahiwi and Mr, F. Katene, who is secretary.

Excellent music was played by the Maori orchestra, which adapted Maori melodies to modern tempo with charming effect.

The committee which was responsible for the success of the dance comprised Misses L. Boffa, J. Gillies, M. Stephen, B. Sheridan, T. McDonnell, C. Sharp, MWilson; Messrs. King! Tahiwi (chairman), O. Heketa, D. Finnigan (secretary),v T. Bingley, J. McEwan, J. iDoulan, and J. Till.

colours gave a rainbow effect and showed to advantage under the brilliant lights. Green painted tikis wfth scarlet tongues protruding were placed over the doorway leading into the supper-room, which was gay . with streamers and paper bells, a fresh contrast being made by the fragrant yellow jonquils which were arranged in tall vases on the tables.
