"SUGGESTION ABSURD"
SOUTHLAND STRIKE
ASSISTANCE FOR MEN
"The suggestion is absurd to start with," the Minister of Labour (the Hon. H. T. Armstrong) said this morning when discussing the suggestion made by Southland miners that there was a possibility of the' Government assisting the men who are idle because of the coal-mine strike. The Minister said that he had not had any request from either party to intervene, and- neither had the officers of his Department. They had learned of the strike through the newspapers, and last night he had been telephoned by someone in Southland who had referred to the possibility of the men being assisted. He had not been able to hear very well, but that appeared to j be the suggestion. - i
The Conciliation Commissioner, Mr. S. Ritchie, was in Invercargill at the present time, the Minister added, and if necessary he would be able to look into the matter.
