CITY RATES
The following letter of protest against the further increase in rates has been sent to the Town Clerk from the Weilington Ratepayers' Association: — "At an executive meeting of the association held last week, the reported statement of the city estimates was roviewed, and while appreciating certain difficulties confronting the present council, the Wellington Ratepayers' Association would point out that although this year's proposed increase in rates is approximately £18,000, the rise over a two-year period embracing the present year amounts to £100,000. "In view of these facts, and the general vising costs, it is suggested that in the interest of ratepayers the council should again carefully review the estimates with a view to obviating the rates being increased.
"The example being set by the Auckland city councillors, who appear determined to honour their election pledges to reduce city administration costs, is one which might well be followed, not only in Wellington, but elsewhere."
