VALUELESS CHEQUES
YOUNG MAN GUILTY Charged with two offences of obtaining money from Jessie Dalrymple Hamilton, licensee of the New Criterion Hotel, Auckland, by means of valueless Cheques, Leonard Ingles Spence, a salesman, appeared before Mr. H. P. Lawry, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday. He pleaded guilty. Detective-Sergeant P. Doyle stated that the accused cashed cheques on June 14 and 16 for £2 Os 6d, and £11 respectively. The cheques were signed by himself. He was of a good family. Mr. A. J. Mazengarb, who appeared for the accused, said that the accused went to the races at Auckland and lost his money. He had an account at a Wellington bank, though there was no money in the account. The writing of the cheques was a foolish action. The accused was admitted to probation for three years, a condition being that he should make restitution of £13 0s 6d.
