CORN SPIRIT FOR DEFENCE The main lines of a decree for the distilling of spirit from corn for the purpose of national defence were decided upon at a recent meeting of the French Cabinet, the Minister of Agriculture, M. Queuille, submitted the decree, which has the double object of increasing the stocks of spirits at present available for national defence and at the same time reabsorbing any surplus in the current crop. The spirit is urgently needed for the manufacture of gunpowder and for the constitution of a reserve of motor fuel. For some years surplus crops of vines and beets have been devoted to the distillation of spirit, a process which has the additional advantage of ensuring a certain stability in prices and production. It is the Government's intention to initiate a similar policy in regard to the corn crops.
