FURTHER PLACE FEATS

A Southland exchange has received the following interesting letter from* J. McLennan, one of the Dominion's leading horsemen of a few seasons ago and now a public trainer at Inverxargill:—"Without wishing to* detract in any way from the splendid performance of F. J. Smith in training all the placed horses at Auckland lately, I can recall two similar performances. Some years ago, the late M. B. Edwards filled the three places in a mile saddle event at Addington. The runners and riders were—Miss Florrie C (A. Pringle), 1; Viewmont (M. B. Edwards), 2; and Scottish Mac (J. McLennan), 3. I might also add that Viewmont was a trotter. Later on at Forbury Park Free Holmes went one better, providing the first four in a mile' saddle event. Law Chimes (E. C. McDermott) was first, Dalwhinnie (J. McLennan) second, 0.1.C. (F. G. Holmes) third, and Queen Patch (A. Butterfield) fourth.

BINGEN LINE PROMINENT Although the results of the racing at the Auckland Trotting Club's Winter Meeting at Epsom were a splendid triumph for Bingen sires, who were represented by six winners, the remainder of the events were well divided among others, Rey de Oro (two), Jack Potts. Wrack, Roy Redmond, Gold Bell, Jewel Pointer, and Our Thorpe all being successfully represented also, states an Auckland writer. Horses of the Bingen line were also nine times placed. The dual success of Pirate's Last, a win by Sylvan, and placings by Pirate's Last, Nelson Chief (twice), and Frontier Boy, gave Nelson Bingen a monopoly of the sires represented in the four races for straight-out trotters. Wild Pirate, dam of Pirate's Last, was by Pirate, by Honesty from the Wildwood mare Wild Tracey. Although not a success when raced, Wild Pirate has proved a prolific and successful brood mare. The progeny of Wild Pirate in r eludes the following good winners:— Oruarangi, by Golcaida; Queen Pirate, by Norminston; Waitaka, by Gold Bell; Peter Pirate, by Peter Moko; and Nelson Pirate, a full-brother to Pirate's Last. As his name implies, the Epsom dual winner is the last of her progeny. An unraced full-sister to Peter Pirate, Wild Moko, is the dam of the useful Kete Kura, by Truman Direct.
