PACERS V. TROTTERS

BIG AUGUST ATTRACTION

(By "Ariki Xoa.")

The initiative of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club in including a pacers v. trotters race on its August programme will earn the commendation of all trotting enthusiasts, and it is to be hoped that the event will receive the patronage it richly deserves. It has long been a subject of controversy among sportsmen as to whether a trotter or a pacer is the better stayer, and the two-mile event instituted by the southern club should at least settle the question once and for all. It would be unfair to ask them to meet off the same mark, and the 72yds start concession from the pacers should ensure the trotters having every opportunity to prove their worth. When it is considered that Peggotty ran the final half-mile in her most recent success in lmin one can easily recognise the difficulty set unhoppled performers. It is the intention of the club to invite nominations, and then choose the best six of either gait to measure strides. It will be interesting to note Peggotty, Sea Gift, Norman Bingen, Wahnooka, Todd Lonzia, and Captain Bolt competing against Parisienne, Supertax, Lucky Jack, Pot Luck, Indianapolis, and U. Scott The concession received should allow* the trotters every opportunity to strike a gait at the start. The race will commend itself to many, and should prove one of the high lights of an excellent season's trotting. , It is understood that consideration is also being given to the suggestion that a race be instituted for three-year-old Allies, the event to be run on similar lines to the Oaks Stakes in the galloping sport History has, supplied abundant evidence of the /all-round qualification of the fillies at an early age, and if the suggestion is finally adopted it would be a first-class attraction to include in the summer programme of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club.
