TOWNSWOMEN'S GUILD

SOCIAL AFTERNOON

The combined Singing and Dramatic Circles of the Wellington Central Branch of the Townswomen's Guild held the first of a series of "social and musical afternoons," which proved exceedingly popular with.the large and very appreciative gathering of members and guests present. In spite of the cold afternoon, the rooms looked bright and cheery, with small tables daintily laid for tea and decorated with spring flowers and foliage. Mrs. Ken. Fowles and Mrs. Alan Thompson, leaders of the singing and dramatic circles respectively, received the guests, and there were also, present Mrs. James Pow (president) and Mrs. P. H. Kinsman (secretary of the guild). The programme opened with two bright choruses by the singing circle, comprising: Mesdames St. Clair, Tickner, East, .Seaton, Williams, McKendry, Pownall, Campbell, Learning, and Thompson, followed after a short interval by an amusing Noel Coward sketch by Mrs. P. H. Kinsman and Mrs, Alan Thompson. Mrs. Muriel Lewis, who was guest of honour, then gave an entertaining talk on "Domestic Life in Hong Kong" and was presented with a sheaf of poppies by Mrs. Fowles at the conclusion of her address!: After a delicious afternoon tea had been served a one-act play was staged by members of the dramatic circle, those taking part being Mesdames Williams, Sti Clair, Fowles, Campbell, Seaton, Jesson, and Miss Ngaire Garlick, and the musical programme concluded with a song of the sea. which made a most cheery ending to a very bright function. . An interesting feature was the display of useful and i artistic work by members of the arts land crafts circle, which is doing pai'j'ticularly well in this direction, under the instruction of Mrs. Edward : Marshall. „ , ■ ~ j Mrs. Pow thanked Mrs. Fowles and i Mrs. Thompson and the members of their committee for a very well organised and bright entertainment, and the hope was expressed that the occasion would be-repeated. Mrs. Pow was presented with a spray of pink carnations.
