WIMBLEDON OPENS

NO SURPRISE RESULTS

BROWN BEATEN BY LEE

ANDREWS SCRATCHES

TJnlted Viesa Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received June 21, 11 a.m.) LONDON, June 20. The Wimbledon lawn tennis championships, in which representatives of over twenty nations are competing, opened in brilliant weather. The New Zealander E. D. Andrews strained his achilles tendon and scratched. J. D. Budge (U.S.A.) opened on the centre court against K. C. Gandar Dower (Great Britain), who failed to sustain his reputation as a giant killer, although he occasionally brought off fine recoveries and attacked gallantly. Budge always spurted when pressed. A minor sensation was caused by E. J. Filby, a rising English player, leading H. W. Austin by two sets to one and 5-4 in the fourth set, but he became over-anxious and missed opportunities.
