RATES INCREASED
DUNEDIN DECISION (By Telegraph—Press Association.) . DUNEDIN, This Day. The City Council last night adopted proposals involving the levying of a general rate of 2s 5d and a hospital rate, of Bd, being an increase of 4d and Id respectively on last year's level. A statement by the finance committee showed the gross estimated revenue was £220,309, and the expenditure £265,430. A minute by the finance committee chairman, Mr. Taverner, stated that with a relatively small revenue the increase in expenditure had advanced year by year till today it was beyond the council's ordinary resources. Expenditure had been mainly caused by substantial increases in the working staff and overhead charges for many works undertaken to absorb labour. The financing had been accomplished by diversion from renewal funds, which since 1935 had fallen by £118,478. i
