WELL RELATED

Lambent, winner of the Rothsay Handicap for two-year-olds at Flemmgton, is a chestnut filly by Thracian (brother to Heroic) from Black Powder. She was bred at The Nook Stud, Victoria. Black Powder is by All Black, so that Lambent is very closely related to the Victoria Derby winner Feldspar, who is by Thracian out of Quartz, by All Black. Black Powder was bred in 1924. Black Powder is also the dam of Cortez, Pelleas, Ammonal, and Merrily. She was bred by Mr. A. T. Creswick. Her dam was Artillerie, by Royal Artillery from Nantes, by Stepniak from Huguenot, by Apremont from Martyr, by Daniel O'Rourke from Raupo, by Diomedes (imp.) from Waimea, by Sir Hercules from Flora Mclvor.

FULL OF INCIDENT

There were only three starters in the Cessnock Welter Mile'at Maitland recently, but they provided enough incidents for any day's racing. When the horses were at the barrier the owner of Sir Mart (I. Hall) found the horse's lead bag had been left in the enclosure. A quick sprint roundthe course by Hall rectified this. In the race Heraway (W. Cook) dead-heated "with Call Mag (E. Reynolds), with Sir Mart (W. Elkin) third, three-quarters of a length away. Reynolds entered a protest against Heraway, alleging interference near the finish, and Elkin lodged a protest against the dead-heaters on the grounds of interference in the straight. Both protests were dismissed, and Elkin was fined £2 for a "frivolous protest." And, just to round it off, I. Hall was fined £2 for carelessness in omitting to see that Sir Mart had his lead bag.

DAM COST ONLY £1

Many winners of the Great Northern Steeplechase claim interesting careers, and Valpeen comes in this category. Eor instance, his owner, Mr. G. Campbell, knows very little of the gelding's family tree. He knows the sire of Valpeen is Valkyrian, but of the dam he knows nothing beyond the fact that she was a mare by Spalpeen. The official racecard gives the dam as "unknown."

Some few years ago, Mr. Campbell, who lives at Okoroire and trains Valpeen, bought a hack for the modest outlay of £1, and later, for some reason, made a deal with a friend, exchanging the hack for a mare by Spalpeen. That mare is the dam of Valpeen, who has now won two Great Northern Steeplechases, a Wellington Steeplechase, and also two Grand National Steeplechases at Riccarton. Like most of Spalpeen's stock, Valpeen, when taken to the hunt, showed an aptitude for jumping and displayed staying ability above the average. Prior to winning his first Great Northern he placed himself in the limelight by winning a double cn one day at the Pakuranga Hunt Meeting, and then went on to Te Kapa to finish second in the hack steeplechase and come out later in the afternoon and win the open steeplechase. Not many horses are asked such a test, but apparently two races in a day offered no serious trouble to Valpeen.
