FAIRNESS AT MEETINGS
(To the Editor.)
Sir—l have been waiting lor an abler pen than mine to acknowledge through the Press the compliment that Mr. Savage paid to the Opposition when, after the heckling meted out by Labour supporters to Opposition speakers in Timaru, the Prime Minister said that for 30 years he had indulged in public speaking and never once had he been heckled. As the j Prime Minister knows his own supporters would never dream of heckling him he evidently referred to his opponents. That is as it should be, and would that newspapers could return the compliment. As the election draws near will supporters of the Labour Party lift up their voices; shall we have fair play for all that is so often Labour's boast, or will they wink their eye as in past years? I wonder. I have attended Labour meetings and except for cheering on every occasion you could hear a pin drop and I have attended Opposition meetings and left with a headache. I may say that Labour loses many votes each election because of failure to accord fair play to the other side. In conclusion I hope that the Prime Minister will have another 30 years of public speaking and at the end still be able to compliment the other side. —I am, etc., A VOTE LOST TO LABOUR.
