CHOOSING A DEPUTY MAYOR
(Special to Ihe "Evening rost.") WANGANUI, May 28. The Wanganui City Council held a meeting on Friday night to elect committees. In all instances but one, the Citizens' League candidates dominated the voting by a majority of one. Mr. Douglas Earle, who was next to top in the council elections, was nominated for the position of Deputy-Mayor, but Councilor Siddells, voting with the Labour members, secured the appointment for Mr. J. J. Scott, secretary of the Workers' Union, who had topped the poll for Labour councillors. There were a number of sharp passages between the two "wings," calling forth a remark to the effect that "the fight has developed early." The Mayor had to request Councillor Scott to withdraw several words.
