COMMUNITY LIGHTING

SHOPPING AREAS

WELLINGTON'S LACK

' "We have been, approached regarding the' lack of community lighting in the shopping areas of Wellington," stated the president, Mr. P. E. Pattrick, in a report to last night's meeting of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce. "Reference has been made to the excellence of various lighting schemes in Auckland.

"The secretary has been in touch with the electrical department of the City Council, who state that the difficulty in the past has been the collection of the necessary charges from the retailers concerned. This is particularly the case when shops change hands. The general manager has undertaken to communicate with the Auckland authorities in an endeavour to discover .just why community lighting should be so successful in Auckland. When this report comes to hand the matter could perhaps bel further discussed."

Mr. A. R. Hislop said there was no doubt that community lighting resulted in a distinct city improvement, and he thought it should result in more business. He referred to what had been done in Auckland and suggested that such streets in Wellington as Willis Street, Cuba Street, and Courtenay Place lent themselves to this form of lighting.

Mr. W. S. Cederholm said that community lighting had been tried out in Wellington, but at that time difficulty had been experienced because certain tenants would not come into the scheme, particularly when shops changed hands. Mr. Pattrick suggested that members give some thought to the matter so that it could be discussed when the report on the success of the scheme in Auckland was available.
