LONDON, May 7. Results of first-round Davis Cup tennis matches are:— At Scarborough.—R. A. Shayes (Britain) beat O. Schmidt (Rumania), 6-3, 6-2, 6-2; C. Carolulis (Rumania) beat C. M. Jones (Britain), 6-3, 6-2, 8-6. At Dublin, Italy eliminated Ireland. G. de Stefani (Italy) beat Ryan (Ireland), 6-2, 6-2, 6-2. The latter replaced McVeagh, who is indisposed. V. Canepele (Italy) beat G. Rogers (Ireland), 5-7, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, 6-1. At Scheveningen H. van Swol (Holland) beat B. Destremeau (France), 6-2, 6-0, 8-6; Y. Petra (France) beat T. Hughan (Holland), 6-3, 6-2, 6-2-. At Zagreb R. Menzel and M. Cejner (Czechoslovakia) beat F, Puncec and y. Mitlc (Yugoslavia), 11-9, 3-6, 9-7, 6-2. At Athens A. Lacroix (Belgium) beat L. A. YESTERDAY'S RESULTS j (Received May 9, 11.15 a.m.) LONDON, May 8. Results of yesterday's play in the Davis Cup matches were:— At Athens, Belgium eliminated Greece. A. Lacroix and L. de Borman (Belgium) beat L. A. Stalios and Michailidis (Greece), 6-2, 6-1, 6-1. At Scheveningen, T. Hughan and H. Van Swol (Holland) beat Y. Petra and Bolelli (France), 6-8,1-6, 6-1, 7-5, 6-2. MATCH ENDS IN CONFUSION (Received May 9, 1.10 p.m.) ZAGREB, May 8. The Davis Cup tie between CzechosloMßkia and Yugoslavia broke up in confusion after F. Funcec (Yugoslavia) had beaten R. Menzel (Czechoslovakia), 3-6, 6-1, 6-1, 6-2. D. Mitic (Yugoslavia) was leading M. Cejnar (Czechoslovakia), 3-6, 7-5, 4-6, 6-1, 2-1, when the Czech walked oft the court under the general agreement to cease play at 7 p.m., which Yugoslavia does not recognise.
