OBITUARY

MR. GEORGE RUTHERFORD

AUCKLAND, May 8,

The eldest brother' of the late Lord Rutherford of Nelson, Mr. George Rutherford, died at his home in Mount Eden on Friday at the age of 71 years. Mr. Rutherford was for many years a leading figure in the flaxmilling industry in Taranaki, at first in association with his father, Mr. James Rutherford, and later at Raglan and Kawhia. He was born at Spring Grove, Nelson, in 1867, four and a half years earlier than his famous brother, who was the fourth of a family of twelve children. Mr. Rutherford had a full share of the energy, force of character, and powers of leadership for which his father and Lord Rutherford were noted. ~ t , , He married in 1901 the eldest daughter of Captain W. E. Anderson, Auckland, and leaves a family of two sons and three daughters, all but one of whom reside in the Auckland Province. i MR. J. F. HOOKER (By Telegraph.) (Special to tho "Evening Post.") NEW PLYMOUTH, This Day. The death has occurred of Mr. John Franklyn Hooker, aged 85. Mr. Hooker was one of New Plymouth's earliest business men and the son of two of the earliest settlers in the district. He was born in 1853, being a son of Mr. and Mrs. Nathaniel Hooker. He had ten brothers and sisters, nine of whom are still living. His father arrived at the settlement in the Timandra in February, 1842, and his mother in the William Bryan in March, 1841. His father built the first English church. Mr. John Hooker was a prominent amateur athlete and at one time was the 100 yards champion of Taranaki. He founded the carrying firm of Hooker Bros., which operates extensive services throughout Taranaki and is the only privately-owned long-dis-tance freight transport company remaining in the province. MR. W. WILSON (By Telegraph—Press Association.) HOKITIKA, This Day. The death oceurred yesterday of Mr. William Wilson, aged 70, manager of the Hokitika Savings Bank, after a short illness. He leaves a widow.
