HARBOUR MISHAP
NO FORMAL INQUIRY RANGATIRA AND ACHILLES No formal inquiry is to be held into the circumstances of the mishap in Wellington Harbour which involved the inter-island ferry steamer Rangatira and H.M.S. Achilles, the Minister of Marine (the Hon. P. Fraser) deciding that such a step is not warranted. The Minister stated today that he had perused the statements taken from officers and men of H.M.S. Achilles and the s.s. Rangatira at the preliminary inquiry before the Superintendent of Mercantile Marine into the collision between these two vessels. The Minister said that from an examination of the statements, the facts of the case and circumstances in which the vessels got into difficulties were quite clear, and he therefore did not consider it necessary to hold a formal inquiry. He added that various matters arising out of the accident would be discussed with representatives of the Navy and the Wellington Harbour Board, in order that the best arrangements possible might be made to minimise the risk of similar accidents in the future.
