FULL AGREEMENT

COACHBUILDERS' DISPUTE

RATES OF PAY DECIDED

Complete agreement was reached in the New Zealand Coach and Motor Body Builders' dispute yesterday afternoon before the Conciliation Commissioner (Mr. M. J. Reardon).

Mr. L. Glover, for the workers, asked for 2s Sid for journeymen, the id • being for tools, 2s ,7id for trimmers, and 2s 7Jd for all other .workers in the case of assembly shops; and for 2s 9?d for journeymen, 2s lid for assemblers, and 2s 5Jd for helpers'in the case of custom shops.

The employers, said Mr. W. J. Mountjoy, insisted upon the employment of some females, but agreed to -increase the starting wage to 25s per week, proceeding by 5s six-monthly increases to 45s in the fifth six months, thereafter not less than £2 10s, the proportion of female workers not to exceed one to every four,adult males. They agreed to the limitation of work to be done by females, so as not to include machining work or any renovations, the tacking in of trimmings in cars, or the making of cushions or squabs. The assurance wap given by the employers that no men. should be put off for the purpose of employing girls.'

Agreement was finally reached on 2s 9d per hour for journeymen in both custom and assembly shops, 2s "7fd for assembly trimmers, 2s 7Jd for assemblers in assembly shops, arid 2s 5Jd for helpers in customs shops. •

In regard to junior males' wages tha employers increased their -x offer to reach £3 5s in the sixth year.

• The proportion of juniors was agreed to, as not to exceed "one to every fire in the smiths' shop, and one to every six assemblers or journeymen.
