1940 CELEBRATIONS
THE MAORI GATHERING
The unsuitability of Waitangi as a place for large gatherings of Maoris was mentioned by Sir Apifana Ngata when speaking at the opening of the new meeting-house at Tupuhaeuru, near Rotorua, on Sunday, .reports the "New: Zealand Herald."
The Mayor of Auckland, Sir Ernest Davis, had been speaking of the part which he hoped the Maori race would take in the Centennial celebrations in 1940, and said that arrangements had already been made to associate the Maoris officially with the Centennial organisation, and no doubt in due course an invitation would be received from the authorities.for the Maoris in Eotorua to participate in the celebrations on dates to be fixed later. He was looking forward with the keenest interest to this participation.
Sir Apirana Ngata said that, based on the experience of the 1934'hui at Waitangi, it appeared that Waitangi was not a suitable place for large gatherings of Natives, and he therefore believed that the .place of assemblage of Maoris for ths 1940 Centennial should be Auckland. vln, this connection he could think of no better place than the Auckland Domain.
