MEXICAN PRESIDENT

EXPROPRIATION OF OIL

COMPANIES

MEXICO CITY, March 24.

Thousands of men, women, and children marched in a great mass demonstration in support of the expropriation of the oil companies. They carried signs against the United, States and shouted: "The gringoes are going."

One group of workers carried a coffin placarded "Here lies the petrol companies." . . ■

Virtually all industrial and commercial activities throughout Mexico ywere brought to a halt, while demonstrations occurred all over the country. Newspapers were not published' and electric light and power was cut off.

President Cardenas, appearing on the balcony of the National Palace, was given a tremendous ovation.

The President said he had no intention of abrogating the expropriation decree, despite diplomatic gestures. He asserted that Mexico faced no .danger of armed intervention, and reiterated that in the near future the Government would pay the companies expropriated.
