VIVID CONTRAST
NATION'S FINANCES
SOUNDNESS OF BRITAIN
ITALY'S DEFICIT
. (United Press Assocjatton-^By Electrlo Telegraph—Copyright.) (Received March 24, 10.15 a.m.). LONDON, March 23. Statements from the Governments of Britain, Italy, and France bring out the vivid contrast between the finances of the respective countries. At the extremes are the soundness of Britain and the plight.of Italy, with Fiance balanced precariously in the middle. *
The "Financial Times," commenting on the revenue returns, says that the Chancellor of the Exchequer has every reason for satisfaction.
In contrast with this comes a report by the Italian Minister of Foreign Exchange, who, according to the Rome correspondent of "The Times," described the Italian trade' deficit of 5,500,000 lire in 1937 as immense, adding that it demanded serious attention and must be reduced to within bearable limits. Imports . must be kept down to the minimum and the export trade pushed. • '
The French finances also contrast with the British. M. Blum has been compelled to resort to inflation in order to finance his armament expenditure.
