NON-POLITICAL UNION
AUCKLAND CLERKS :
REJECTION OF AFFILIATION
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
AUCKLAND, March 23,
By an overwhelming majority of 149 votes against 38, members of the Auckland Clerical and Office, Staff Employees' Industrial Union of Workers decided tonight not to affiliate with the New Zealand Labour Party. It js understood the question was warmly debated and that interjections were fairly frequent. There was practically an equal number of men and women present. ' ;' Inquiries, made, at .'the-close of,/, the meeting .suggested that although the union is potentially one of the largest in the northern industrial district, rhemb'ers did not take, very seriously the suggestion that they should ally themselves with Ah/i Labour Party and for that, reason they did not attend. It was said shortly . after the motion was put to the 187 members who were present that a member wished to move an amendment that, instead of affiliat-. ing with "the Labour Party, the union should associate itself with the National Party.. It is believed the amendment was ruled'out of order and that another member was of opinion that the union should not. become a unit in any political movement. There appears to have been general agreement on' this point. .
