NEXT WEEK'S PROGRAMMES

Following are brief details of the programmes scheduled by the national stations for the week commencing next Sunday.

The after-churchJ programme from 2YA on Sunday evening will be a recorded presentation of the Gilbert and Sullivan opera "The Pirates of Penzance." From 3YA listeners will be entertained with classical music from 8.30 till 9.5 p.m., when there will be a studio presentation of the radio play "Congo Landing," followed.by recordings by John Charles Thomas (baritone) and the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra. The programme from 4YA will comprise recorded operatic selections from the works of" the leading Italian composers. Following a programme of miscellaneous recorded grand opera excerpts, IYA will broadcast a recorded version of Mascagni's "Cavalleria Rusticana."

A chamber music programme will open the concert session from 2YA on Monday evening, including, at 8.22, an art song recital by Eileen Courtenay (mezzo-soprano). From 9.5 there will be a continuity programme, "Isn't it Romantic?" illustrating romance in music. The first, half of the programme from 3YA will be provided by the Woolston Brass Band, with vocal interludes by Claude O'Hagan (baritone). From 9.20 chamber music will be broadcast. A recital programme is scheduled by 3YA till 8.40, the artists being Ada Allan (contralto) and Clarice Drake (piano). At 9.5 there will be a studio presentation of "Three Women"—portraits from stories by Katherine Mansfield, the famous New Zealand writer. A session of swing band dance music .is scheduled for 10 p.m. At 8 p.m. IYA will broadcast a further "Scott, of Scotland Yard" presentation—"The Case of the Nameless Corpse." This will be followed by a recital by Zoe Bartley-Baxter, elocutionist. At 9.5 there will be a ringside commentary on the professional boxing matches being decided in the Auckland Town Hall. °

Compositions by Mozart and Liszt will compose the major portion of the programme from 2YA on- Tuesday evening, including a pianoforte recital at 9.5 by Colin Horsley, of Wanganui. A programme of popular recordings will be broadcast by 3YA. Following a popular programme from 4YA, a recorded band concert will be.presented; A variety programme is scheduled by IYA. : . •,...■ ;-.

A light orchestral and ballad concert will be broadcast in the first half of 2YA's programme on Wednesday. evening, Hamilton . Dickson's • String Orchestra beirig featured. At 9.5 the, radio play" "His Father's Sword" will be broadcast. Classical music will be presented by 3YA. Following an hour of chamber music, from IYA, a variety programme will be broadcast. ;

A popular programme is scheduled by 2YAfor Thursday "evening. At 9.5 the young Wanganui pianist, Colin Horsley, will broadcast a recital of Chopin compositions, and at 9.20 Marjorie Bennie (mezzo-soprano) may be heard in modern songs. At 9.32 there will be a special "April Fool's Day" programme, in which the history and follies of April 1 will be reviewed in a dramatic presentation.; Two radio plays are featured in 3YA's programme—"Under the Jolly Roger—the Devil Takes Hisi Own," and "Murder in Bohemia." "Masterpieces of Music" will be featured in 4YA's programme at 9.20. Following a varied .programme from IYA, recorded band music. will be broadcast from 9.20. . \

Miscellaneous recordings and a recorded band programme may be heard from 2YA on Friday evening till 10 o'clock, when a special swing dance session will be broadcast. A recital programme will be presented from 3YA. Following light, popular^ entertainment from 4YA,- there will be; a broadcast of chamber music,.. and: a relay of danee f music from the Savoy restaurant. Mr. D'Arcy Cress well will open lYA's programme with a reading from "Robinson Crusoe." This will be followed by classical music.

Variety programmes are scheduled by all the main stations for Saturday evening. . " ,
