FAMOUS GOLF COURSE
The;; famous 'English championship golf course -Westward Ho! is peculiar among golf clubs in that it pays no rent. It may, however, have to do so
after the year 1980. The surrounding property, which today includes the golf course, belonged to a certain John Melhuish, who died in 1780. His will, which is engraved in- .the wall of Northam Church, decreed that his en-
tire estate should' remain in abeyance for 200 years, after which it should pass to the heir, with the best claim to the title. <■"■■
1 Ever since 1780. therefore, farmers and other tenants on the land have paid no rent. Recently the Government tried to charge the club rent for a part of the course, on the ground that it was foreshore. The club was willing to pay. But a claimant under Melhuish's will objected, his objection was sustained by legal opinion, and the club still.pays no rent.. .'■■'". \
