NEW AWARDS ISSUED

SLIGHT WAGES INCREASES

New awards for New Zealand cooks and stewards,- and galley staffs, have been issued by the Court of Arbitration. The Court has made the wages, provisions of the Cooks' .and Stewards' Award retrospective as from January 1 of this year; the other provisions came into force as from Tuesday of this week. The award is to continue in force until March 1, 1940. In a memorandum Mr. Justice O'Regan points out that the award embodies, with minor alterations, the recommendations arrived at in conciliation council. As requested by the parties, his Honour has called attention to provisions in the registered rules of the union dealing with the wilful commission of breaches of the award or agreement with any employer or master of a ship. The award applies to the work of stewards and stewardesses in ships for which articles are taken out in New Zealand. It does not in any case apply to steamers employed in the inter-State trades of the Commonwealth of Australia or to steamers employed in trading with the United Kingdom, nor does it apply to chief stewards of passenger steamers. SCHEDULE OF WAGES. The wages provisions, it was stated to day, represent slight increases. The schedule of wages fixed per .calendar, month is as follows: — Stewards in charge of trans-Pacific cargo steamers, £22; stewards in charge of cargo steamers, £21 10s; second steward (Awatea only), £18; second steward, £17 10s; extra second steward, £17 10s; chief saloon steward (head waiter first or second saloon), £16; steward in charge of second saloon in vessels in which three classes of passengers are carried, £17 10s; first-grade assistant stewards employed either as printers, linenkeepers, or storekeepers, £16; printer (Awatea only), £16 10s; first-grade assistant stewards employed either as bedroom stewards, saloon waiters, or buglers if acting as either bedroom . stewards or saloon waiters, bathroom stewards, messroom stewards, barmen, smokeroom stewards, lounge stewards, deck stewards, or officers' steward, £15 10s; forecabin stewards, £16 10s; laundry steward, £16 v 10s; laundress, £12; second-grade assistant stewards employed either as assistant forecabin stewards, boots, main deck stewards, or assistant pantrymen, £15; pantrymen, first saloon, intercolonial and foreign-going passenger steamers, £17; pantrymen, first or second saloon, £16 10s; second pantrymen, where three or more pantrymen are carried, £15 10s; pantrymen (forecabin), £15 10s; assistant stewards, cargo steamers, £15; nightwatchmen, £17; cadets, under 17 years £7 2s 6d, 17 to 19 years I£9 12s 6d, 19 to 21 years £10 17s 6d; ■ stewardess, £12; assistant stewardess, £11; forecabin stewardess, £12.

For the-purpose of computing payments for broken periods a calendar month is to be reckoned as thirty days.

Where assistant stewards on cargo vessels have to look after and attend on passengers other than cargo workers they are to be paid at the rate fixed- for first-grade, bedroom,stewards during the time the passengers are in board. Stewards-in-charge of "cargo vessels on which passengers other than cargo workers are carried are to be paid an additional 3s 6d per day during the time the passengers are on board. ■■.'.■' . : .

Stewards required to attend to luna-

tics or persons suffering from contagious diseases (on the certificate of the ship's surgeon and with the approval of the master) are to be paid 10s per day in addition to their sea-pay whilst performing such duties.

Where a steward is required by the ship to sleep and take his meals on shore while on articles, he is to be paid 2s for each meal and 4s for a bed. Stewards working by a vessel when off the ship's articles, and before the time set out for commencing work by the ship's articles of agreement, are to be paid the following rates for time worked:—Steward in charge of cargo or passenger ships, 2s 8d ordinary time per hour and 4s overtime per hour: second and forecabin stewards, 2s 6d and 3s 9d; other stewards, except cadets, 2s 4d and 3s 6d; cadets, Is 6d and 2s 3d. OVERTIME RATES. The overtime rates have been fixed at 2s >ld per hour for ratings whose wages are fixed at £16 16s per month or more, and 2s 8d for other ratings; cadets, Is 7d per hour; 2s 8d per hour for stewardesses in certain circumstances and Is lid per hour in all other cases. The clause does not apply to stewards in charge. In lieu of payment of overtime they are to receive a payment of 15 per cent, of the monthly wages provided for them. Time off at the rate of two and a half hours for each hour worked as overtime may be allowed subject to certain provisions in lieu of payment for overtime, except overtime incurred on Sundays or holidays, other than the port watch. The hours clauses provide for a maximum of eight hours per day, and provision for an annual holiday of 14 days on full pay. GALLEY STAFFS. A separate award has also been issued for the galley staffs. The wages provisions are retrospective as from January 1 last. The schedule of wages (per calendar month) is as follows:— (a) Passenger steamers: Chief cook (intercolonial and foreign-going steamers), £24 8s; chief cook (steamers other than intercolonial and foreigngoing), £22/18s; senior second cook (Awatea only), £20 18s; second cook, £18 18s; extra second cook, £17 18s; third cook, £16 8s; extra third cook, £15 8s; third-class cook (Maunganui and Monowai only), £17 8s; ship's cook, £18 8s; assistant ship's cook, £14 18s; baker (intercolonial and foreign-going steamers), £20 8s; baker (other than intercolonial and foreigngoing steamers), £19 8s; second baker (where two-or more bakers are carried), £17 8s! assistant baker, £16 8s; butcher (intercolonial and foreigngoing steamers), £17 18s; butcher (steamers other than intercolonial and foreign-going), £16 18s; second butcher (where two or more butchers are carried), £16 8s; assistant butcher, £15 8s; sculleryman, £14 18s. (b) Cargo steamers: Chief cook, £19l 8s; second cook (where three employed), £16 8s; assistant cook, £14 18s.
