CLOSED N.Z. SEASON
A closed Dominion season for opossums was recommended to the Internal Affairs Department by the Welling Acclimatisation Society last night, and. failing that, a six weeks' local season only.
The Undcr-Secretary of Internal Affairs (Mr. J. W. Hcenan) wrote asking the society's recommendations regarding an open season for opossums in the Wellington district this year.
The rangers reported that the majority of local opossum trappers and skin buyers would welcome a closed season for the Wellington district. It was of little use, however, to close the season in this district, while neighbouring societies held an open ' season, as the closed areas would be poached, and the skins sold in open districts. What was desired was ' a
Dominion closed season, with an open season about every third year, which would enable opossums to breed. . Under present conditions many licence-holders would not obtain enough to meet expenses. Failing a closed Dominion season, he would recommend a six weeks season1 from July 21 to August 31 for the Wellington district.
The whole matter, said the chairman, was the need for a closed 'or open season in contiguous districts.
It was decided to recommend an all Dominion close season, failing that, a six weeks' local season.
